I am a highly observational person, and all that I have witnessed of life, the body, my mother, and our earth converge into a visual language that falls somewhere between abstract and representation. I primarily make oil paintings, large drawings using graphite and watercolor, small hand-bound books that go hand in hand with my work, and recently, etching. My process is purely intuitive and usually a very somatic experience. Maintaining a visual lexicon of my observations deepens my understanding of how interconnected and symbiotic humans, the Earth, and the cosmos are. I am building upon my own language and symbolism as I uncover these interwoven pieces of the matrix.
Most of my work begins with the human form in an act of movement; these come from a source of memory from my time as a dancer, a key informer to my current practice. I see these feminine forms being held by a netting of support, but also of heartache. The netting is vast and judgmentless, like what I imagine floating through the universe would feel like. Or what resting in my mother's womb would feel like. These forms act as vessels that hold my understandings of motherhood, womanhood, and the human body. I explore the quiet, intricate systems of resistance and ritual that bodies perform; specifically, the menstrual cycle, lactation, regeneration, and the creation of life. These bodily acts of resistance are tied to the countless movements of resistance in our world today.
Lastly, I am heavily influenced by mothers; my own mother, and by the many women who have raised me through the years. The sacrifices and never-ending actions of giving that they take on. While balancing all that possibly could be balanced, mothers have to learn to resist their generational traumas and grievances. A constant paradox of surrender and resistance. As I move through all of these notions and fascinations, my work allows me to harness reflections of myself - capturing all the micro-transitions I am living through as I enter womanhood, learning to embrace my identity as a half-Latinx person, and how my peers and I are navigating our place/purpose in a world fraught with inequity and violence.
